Troubleshooting Common Irrigation Issues

Winter can cause major damage to your sprinklers and other below-ground irrigation components. Before winter settled in, Spartan Irrigation talked about the importance of winterizing your sprinkler system. But, if you missed that post or failed to winterize properly, then this post is for you. We can’t tell you how many homeowners call us to troubleshoot these common irrigation system issues in the spring.

Sprinkler Head Issues

When you use your sprinkler system for the first time after winter, faulty sprinkler heads might be the start of your problems. These issues can include nozzles not rising, nozzles not turning, or water spraying every which way from a couple. So, start with a simple inspection of each sprinkler head. Look for cracks or even debris that’s clogging the nozzle. If any of your sprinkler heads look damaged, give us a call, and we’ll come to replace them!

Low Water Pressure

If your system appears to not have any water pressure, you likely have a leak. Failing to winterize your system means water sat in the lines, froze, expanded, and then damaged or cracked the pipe. Your first task is to inspect all the sprinkler heads and make sure they’re not damaged. Then, you can let your system run and look for any pools or wet spots on your lawn. If you notice puddles forming, you likely have a leak underground. Thankfully, your irrigation experts at Spartan can make these fixes.

Zoning Issues

Sometimes complete sections fail after a long, cold winter. This is a common troubleshooting issue. If this is your scenario, then you likely don’t have to worry about any water leaks. Instead, the issue is may be with your valves, controller or electrical system. To troubleshoot, make sure your controlling system is plugged in correctly, and programmed to run. You can check your voltage. If the voltage ranges are outside the recommendations of the owner’s manual, then  it’s a good indication you may need a new controller. If the zone still won’t work, you may have more advanced electrical or valve issues.  If you need help getting to the bottom of the problem, Spartan has the knowledge and testing equipment to help properly diagnose and repair.
